Welcome to the PRISM Laboratory Project Information Pack. In this website, you will find details of a number of quite diverse research projects. The commonality that underpins all of these projects is the adoption of a multi-agent perspective.

Consequently, the projects outlined here are organised into two distinct categories:

  • Core Technologies: These projects focus on the implementation of core technologies that are applied across a range of projects within the laboratory. The principle objective of our research in this area is to develop state-of-the-art tools that provide support for the fabrication of agent-based systems. This includes: run-time infrastructures, programming languages, methodologies, and development tools.
  • Applications: These projects focus on the use of the core technologies to implement novel demonstrator applications in a range of problem domains, including: mobile computing, u-Commerce, Robotics, Virtual/Mixed Reality, and Information Retrieval. A key objective in these projects is to apply agent technologies to challenging real world problem domains.

By way of illustration, we introduce a number of these projects in more detail:

  • Agent Factory [Core]: A Java-based software engineering framework that provides structured support for the development and deployment of agent-oriented systems that can be run on servers, desktop machines, or PDAs [more].
  • AFME [Core]: A Java-based framework, that can be used in tandem with Agent Factory, for developing agent-oriented systems that can be deployed on devices that support J2ME-MIDP. Offers the smallest memory footprint of any deliberative agent framework currently available [more].
  • ACCESS (Agents Chanelling ContExt Sensitive Services) [Application-Mobile Computing]: Award-winning open and scalable architecture for deploying multiple heterogeneous content aware and location sensitive mobile services [more].
  • MiRA (Mixed Reality Agents) [Application - Mixed Reality/Robotics]: Project that seeks to build mixed reality applications that use robots as real world avatars for virtual characters [more].
  • NEXUS [Application - Mixed Reality]: Project that investigates how to build virtual characters that are aware of and can interact with/through the physical (real) world [more].
  • HOTAIR [Application - Information Retrieval]: Project that investigates scalability and adaptability within large scal multi-agent systems. In particular, the testbed for this research is a scalable agent-based search engine architecture [more].
  • Mobile Computing Systems [Application-Mobile Computing]: This page describes three additional bespoke mobile computing systems that have been developed by the PRISM Laboratory, including: AD-ME, EasiShop, and Gullivers Genie [more].
